Anthology ‘Unfinished Conversations’ Confronts the Weight of What’s Left Unsaid
There’s some conversations we rehearse to ourselves for years without ever having them.
A new and anthology from Quillkeepers Press, Unfinished Conversations features work from 69 writers across the world. Through poetry, essays, memoir, fiction and other literary forms, contributors consider strained relationships, grief, personal identity and the complicated process of moving forward without complete resolution.
For Quillkeepers Press Editor-in-Chief Stephanie Lamb, the idea began with her own memories of things she had kept to herself.
“Unfinished Conversations came to me in a serendipitous way,” Lamb said. “I found myself reflecting on a lifetime of words left unsaid. Reflecting on the difficult conversations I avoided, the apologies I never voiced, the questions I never asked, and wondering how differently life might have unfolded if I had simply said ‘the thing.’”
The anthology’s theme soon stepped off the page and into Lamb’s own life. She learned that her estranged mother had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The news opened a final opportunity for them to address some of the pain between them.
“I entered that conversation with a heavy heart, knowing there would never be perfect words or perfect closure,” Lamb said. “But I learned that healing doesn’t always come from finding the right ending; it comes from having the courage to begin the conversation at all.”
As contributors trusted the press with their most personal stories, Lamb began to see the anthology differently. The collection does anything but force or chase a perfectly packaged ending. It gives writers room to sit in all the emotional fallout that comes with the things we never said and the closure we never found — all that still lives within us.
“Unfinished Conversations is an invitation for readers to reflect on the words they’ve carried for years and, if they’re able, to finally give voice to them,” Lamb said.
