Our Mission
When we are denied the chance to tell our own stories, history learns to speak over us.
The Alethean Review is a literary journal dedicated to revealing the truth of diverse human experience. We’re committed to amplifying voices of all backgrounds and identities so that history is written by all of us, and not in our absence.
Our Vision
The Alethean Review is inspired by the term Aletheia, the Greek personification of truth. We chose this moniker because it’s a term that reflects something we must reclaim, now more than ever. So many important voices have been swept under the rug for far too long, and we envision a literary landscape where those voices can be heard and valued as they rightfully deserve.
What We Publish
We welcome work shaped by a wide range of lived experiences, including race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, nationality, and other realities too often pushed to the margins.
Poetry
We welcome formal, hybrid, contemporary, and experimental poetry. We love a drawn out, strong metaphor, vivid (and even visceral) imagery, and diction that reaches past the obvious. Surprise us!
Fiction
We seek fiction with fleshed-out characters and obstacles that are anything but lukewarm. While contemporary fiction tends to hold our interest most, we do love a compelling surrealist or speculative piece.
Nonfiction
Send us essays with a strong, consistent argument and point of view. We're down for those rabbit hole, research-driven critical reviews, and are equally open to literary essays with a personal spin.
